The Dominican Senate issued yesterday an apology to United States president, Barack Obama, for the insult said in public by former president Hipolito Mejia, in a political event organized by U.S. senator Rev. Ruben Diaz, giving his support to Mejia in the next presidential elections in DR.

The apology document signed by 31 of the 32 Dominican senators, was due the racial insults issued by Hipolito Mejia to president Barack Obama. Mejia stated that if Obama, which is African, who was born in Africa, is president of United States, the Dominicans who are a better gracious racial mix, can also become presidents in USA, it is just a matter to start.
The American nation is the main trade partner with Dominican Republic, and both countries are signatories to international agreements to reject racism and discrimination of all kinds. The 31 senators added that the practice of politics in all its expressions, requires rational behavior, integrity and respect.
Amable Aristy Castro, representative of the province of La Altagracia and leader of the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC), was the only senator who did not sign the statement of apology. Aristy, which his American Visa was revoked back in 2006, supports the presidential candidacy of former President Hipolito Mejia.
The American Embassy explained that Aristy Castro’s visa was revoked because he was found ineligible according to an Immigration and Naturalization Department’s law.
