Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., today announced the indictment of MARK LUGO, 31, for stealing five paintings from the Chambers Hotel, which the hotel purchased for $1,800 each, and one painting from the Carlyle Hotel worth approximately $350,000. LUGO is charged with Grand Larceny in the Second and Third Degrees and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Second and Third Degrees.[1]
“In an effort to display stolen art in his apartment, this repeat art thief boldly walked out of two Manhattan hotels in broad daylight with valuable paintings,” said DA Vance.
According to documents filed in court and statements made on the record in court, on June 14, 2011, LUGO walked into the Chambers Hotel in Midtown Manhattan and put into a canvas tote bag a set of five paintings entitled “Pastel on Board” by Mie Yim, which were sold to the hotel for $1,800 each. On June 28, 2011, LUGO entered the Helly Nahmad Gallery, which is connected to the Carlyle Hotel in Upper East Side Manhattan, and put into his canvas tote bag a sketch that was being stored in the gallery’s employee entrance area. This sketch is entitled “Composition With Mechanical Elements” by Fernand Leger and is worth approximately $350,000. On July 14, 2011, working with New Jersey authorities, the New York City Police Department found the six stolen art pieces hanging on the walls of LUGO’s apartment in Hoboken, New Jersey.
Assistant District Attorneys Meghan Hast and Amy Schwartz are handling the prosecution of this case, under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney William Mahoney, Chief of Trial Bureau 60.
