Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., today announced the sentencing of JESUS ALEJANDRO, 22, to 23 years-to-life in prison. On November 2, 2011, ALEJANDRO was convicted at trial on one count of Murder in the Second Degree. On April 27, 2008, the defendant stabbed his girlfriend, Christina Hernandez, 25, to death in her apartment.
“This senseless death was the culmination of a relationship plagued by violence,” said District Attorney Vance. “Communities, legislators, and law enforcement must work together to stop this domestic violence crisis, including enacting stronger laws to prosecute repeat offenders. This brutal murder left a family without their daughter and a child without his mother.”
On November 2, 2011, a jury in New York State Supreme Court found ALEJANDRO guilty of killing Ms. Hernandez. On April 23, 2008, ALEJANDRO stabbed Ms. Hernandez 26 times with a knife in her apartment at 234 East 119th Street. Ms. Hernandez’s roommate, who was in his bedroom when he heard her scream, walked down the hall to investigate and saw the defendant holding a knife in one hand and restraining Ms. Hernandez with his other arm. After Ms. Hernandez’s roommate left the apartment to call 911, ALEJANDRO would not open the door and police officers were unable to enter the apartment. It was only after ALEJANDRO jumped from the third-floor fire escape that police officers were able to access the apartment through the fire escape. ALEJANDRO was arrested in the back of the building, where he landed after he jumped. Ms. Hernandez died from her wounds at the hospital.
This trial is the most recent example of violence between intimate partners turning deadly. On October 20, 2011, Andre Velez was sentenced to 18-years-to-life for murdering the mother of his child in her apartment. On October 4, 2011, Laurence Harvey, a former Department
